Alarmist ‘news’ and articles are appearing all over the web proclaiming that the end of filesharing is nigh. No it isn’t. Don’t be so silly. The cause of the abject terror and sensationalism in the media is the recent case filed by the RIAA (Recording Industry Artists Of America, representing the Big Four recording companies) against LimeWire. The filing of a case by the RIAA is certainly nothing new, but this time it appears to have come out on top. US Judge Kimba Wood’s 59-page decision describes a litany of copyright abuse by the filesharing giant and its software. Interestingly founder Mark Gorton is personally implicated in all that LimeWire is accused of doing. The LimeWire filesharing software is used by some 55% of Americans who admit to downloading music. Its demise would leave a large hole. But this hole would be filled just as quickly as it was made. The demise and retreat of a huge name from the filesharing world is not unprecedented (think Napster and The Pirate Bay), and the industry adapts phenomenally well to such set backs. Services like Ares are more than ready to take the place of any cut in market share by LimeWire.
